A
Review By Metro Country.........
About a decade ago John brought out a demo recording of a couple of his
own songs which created interest within country music circles. "Only A
Fool" and "Know The Dance" saw him and his five piece band touring the
country music circuit winning gigs on the Pontins festival stages and
the likes of The Mill At The Pier in Wigan. Of
the original's, the title track, "You Close The Door & I'll Get
The Lights" is undoubtedly the strongest. Just listen to the inspired
piano glissando on the second verse, it makes the hairs stand up on the
back of my neck!
Probably,
less well known songs on the album include the opener "High Fashion
Queen" a Gram Parsons Chris Hillman co-write when they were members
of the Country/Rock outfit, The Flying Burrito Brothers and "Wrap
My Arms Around The World" a song that marked the 60th International
hit record for Narvel Felts when he had success with it in the early 90s.
John
McCane possesses one of the best voices I have heard on the British Country
Music scene and with the self penned material on here, proves he is up
there with the best of the writers too!

Review By Metro Country.........
"Area Code 0161".........named after the telephone code for
the area he lives in........ is the sophomore CD from Salford born
Singer/Songwriter John McCane, following on from the highly successful,
"You Get The Lights".
The
tracks are made up of 5 original's, 2 co-write's, 2 from John himself,
an absolute cracker from the pen of Liverpool artist Tony Ainscough, and
8 covers. When
it comes to covers, John doesn't follow the trend of covering the most
popular songs of the moment. Instead, he goes for good songs, that are
rarely picked up on. On this occasion, John does an excellent reading
of Southern Pacific's, "New Shade Of Blue", a terrific song
that was a top 5 hit for the band in the late 80s. Surprisingly, I haven't
heard a cover of the song in the 15 or so years since. Until now that
is! "Familiar Pain" is a song that...... I must admit.........
I hadn't heard before, but research tells me that it was recorded by Restless
Heart, and there again, although it's a good song, I don't believe any
other band have picked up on it, thus it retains it's freshness and appears
on the album as a new song.
Speaking
to John, he told me that "Area Code 0161" took many months and
many trips across the water to Ireland to complete. Well, in my opinion,
after listening to these 13 tracks, the trips were well worth it! more...

Review By Metro Country.........
Third
album from John and once again, along with band members, Peter McDonald(Keyboards)
and John Cosgrove(Drummer) they made the trip across the water to Northern
Ireland, to team up with top producer and musician, Stephen Smyth.
John
has, once again, stuck to his winning formulae of mixing rarely covered
songs with his own originals, a mix that is always well received by his
legion of fans. 4
original tracks this time out, which include a co-write with Keyboard
player Pete McDonald, 2 penned by John himself, and the excellent "Who's
Gonna Hold Me" a song written by Manchester and Nashville songwriter,
Lorna Flowers. Once
again, some careful thought has gone into the selection of cover songs
and I am pleased to see some of my own all time favourite songs on here.
